This newly built home in Waukee got a custom landscape makeover designed to complement its earthy tones and elevate its curb appeal, day and night.
When we arrived, this Waukee property was a blank canvas: no landscaping, no defined beds, and no outdoor lighting. But the homeowner had a vision: create something that feels natural yet polished, timeless yet unique. At Tebock’s Landscape, we turned that vision into a standout design featuring raised garden beds, custom retaining walls, perennial plantings, and integrated LED lighting.
What Were the Goals for This Waukee Landscaping Project?
We aimed to create raised beds that enhanced the home’s architecture and tied into its earth-toned aesthetic.
The home featured warm, neutral tones and bright white trim, so our landscape design sought to mirror and enhance those features. The result is a cohesive and balanced look that makes the home feel complete — and draws attention for all the right reasons.
How Were the Raised Beds Constructed?
We used a tumbled three-piece retaining wall system to build elevated planting areas with natural character.
To add visual interest and create height variation across the front yard, we constructed raised planting beds using a tumbled three-piece block system. The rustic texture and varied block sizes created a natural, stone-like appearance that complements the home’s earthy exterior.
To bring out the bright white trim on the home, we topped the walls with white retaining wall caps, which pop against the brown and tan tones of the stone below. This contrast gives the landscape a crisp, refined edge that elevates the whole front façade.
What Plants Were Used in the Landscape Design?
We selected a variety of perennials and shrubs to soften the space and provide color throughout the seasons.
A mix of drought-tolerant perennials and low-maintenance shrubs were chosen to add both texture and year-round interest to the raised beds. These plants help soften the hardscape elements, while their layered heights and colors bring the space to life.
The thoughtful planting plan also ensures that something is always in bloom or showing seasonal interest, whether it’s spring blossoms, summer greens, or fall textures.
Why Was River Rock Chosen for the Landscape Beds?
River rock brings out the natural colors in the retaining walls while maintaining a clean, earthy aesthetic.
To finish the beds, we used river rock as a ground cover — not only for its drainage and durability benefits, but also for its visual impact. The soft browns and tans in the rock blend seamlessly with the stone walls, reinforcing the earthy palette while reducing long-term maintenance.
How Does Landscape Lighting Enhance the Project at Night?
LED landscape lighting brings the design to life after dark — and turns heads in the neighborhood.
We installed low-voltage LED lighting to highlight key architectural and landscaping features at night. The lights create warm ambiance along the walls and plantings, making the home stand out on the block and providing both safety and elegance after sunset.
This added layer of design ensures that the landscaping is just as impressive at night as it is during the day — and it’s already become the talk of the neighborhood.
