This home in the Greenwood Historic neighborhood of Des Moines was having erosion and water drainage problems. Steep hillsides with little vegetation caused soil to wash to the nearby creek, leaving deep washouts on the property. To help remediate the area, we installed limestone outcropping slabs on the hillsides by embedding them partially into the soil to create a natural landscape like you would find in nature. The outcropping stones, some weighing up to 3,000 pounds are heavy enough to divert the water and stop the soil from washing.
To further keep the erosion problems at bay, we planted over 800 native wildflowers on the hillsides which will have deep, extensive roots and further keep the soil from washing. To access the playground on the property, we install limestone steps down the hillside from the driveway. The limestone steps are much safer than walking down the steep hillside and allows a quicker access time rather than walking around the property.
