What to Think Through Before We Build Your Outdoor Kitchen

An outdoor kitchen is one of the most-used things we build. It’s also the one project where planning makes the biggest difference. A grill island in the wrong spot gets used twice a summer. A kitchen planned around how you actually cook and host gets used three seasons a year.

Here’s what we walk through with every customer before we break ground.

Where should it go?

Closer to the house usually wins. Shorter trips to the indoor kitchen, easier utility runs, and you’ll actually use it on a random Tuesday. But wind, sun, and the view from your patio matter too. We look at how your yard already works before we suggest a spot.

What do you actually cook?

Be honest here. If you grill burgers most weekends, you don’t need a six-burner setup with a smoker and a pizza oven. If you really do host big family cookouts, counter space for prep and serving matters more than another appliance. We design around the cooking you do, not the cooking you saw on TV.

What utilities does it need?

Gas, water, and electric each add cost and each add capability. A simple setup needs none of them. A full kitchen with a refrigerator, sink, and lighting needs all three, and running them is much cheaper during construction than after. This is the decision that most affects budget, so we put it early in every conversation.

What will it be made of?

Iowa weather is the design constraint. We build with materials that handle the freeze-thaw swings: sealed stone surfaces, stainless steel appliances, and bases built on proper foundations. That’s the difference between a kitchen that looks good for two summers and one that looks good for twenty.

What goes around it?

The kitchen is rarely the whole project. Bar seating, a dining area, a fire feature for the shoulder seasons, lighting for the evenings, and plantings for shade and privacy all turn a cooking station into a place people stay. We plan the space as one design so it doesn’t feel bolted together.

What does it cost?

It depends on the answers above, which is exactly why we start with the questions. We custom-design each kitchen to fit your space, style, and budget, and we’ll tell you plainly where a dollar does the most work.
