What Our Seeding Work Covers

Overseeding

Seed spread over an existing lawn to thicken it up and fill thin spots. Best right after fall aeration, when the open plug holes give the seed a place to land.

Slice Seeding

A machine cuts shallow grooves and drops seed straight into them, so it’s in contact with soil instead of sitting on top of thatch. The right call for lawns that need more than a top-dress.

New Lawn Seeding

New construction, backyard renovations after a patio or wall project, or a yard you want to start over. We grade, loosen, and prep the soil, then seed and tell you exactly how to water it.

Repairing Bare and Washed-Out Areas

Spots the winter, the dogs, or the runoff took out. We fix the soil and the reason it failed, then reseed so it doesn’t fail the same way again.

Seed or Sod? It Depends on the Yard

We install both, and we’ll tell you straight which one your yard calls for. Four things decide it: budget, how soon you need to use the lawn, how steep it is, and how much shade it gets. Seed costs less up front and offers more variety, but we recommend keeping traffic off a new seeding for 4 to 5 weeks, and it won’t hold a steep slope while it establishes. Sod holds slopes that seed washes off of, and the wait is shorter: we recommend keeping traffic off new sod for 2 to 3 weeks. Heavy shade is hard on both, and it changes what we recommend. If your yard has runoff cutting through it, we may fix the drainage before either one goes down.

Timing matters in Central Iowa. Late summer into early fall is the best seeding window here: warm soil, cooler nights, fewer weeds competing. Spring seeding works, but expect to fight crabgrass for it.
